A former British Vogue editor shows what not to say after youve been fired

A former British Vogue editor shows what not to say after youve been firedA former British Vogue editor shows what not to say after youve been firedShortly after Lucinda Chambers welches fired from her job as the fashion directorof British Vogue, she decided to air her grievances and reflect on her 36 year-tenure at the fashion magazinein an exit interview with the journal Vestoj. The interview was so revealing that it got taken down when it was published on Monday and then re-posted, with an editorial note thatChambers former employer Conde Nast was launching a lawsuit. The interviewer suggested that the magazine company was upset that Chambers had insulted important fashion brands - who are also important advertisers in its magazines. Its not surprising that the discussion has launched a lively discussion. No onecomes out of this interview unscathed- from an industry that will chew you up and spit you out tocrap magazine cover shoots with mediocre designers and their appalling work .Chambers gives a bridge-burning interview full of disclosures that make it clear shedoes not expect to work in the magazine industry again- or at least, never again at publisher Cond Nast. Its also full of candid observations about jobsand careers that we can learn from.Own your storyAfter you get fired, its all too easy to let the rupturing auffhrung consume you and subsumeyour identity, and to obsess about it. But its important to remember that you are not this one job, event or failure.Thisdebate comes up in a conversation Chambers relays she had after her firing Later I was having lunch with an old friend who had just been fired from Sothebys. She said to me, Lucinda, will you please stop telling people that youve been fired. I asked her why its nothing Im ashamed of. She told me, If you keep talking about it, then that becomes the story. The story should be that youve had the fruchtwein incredible career for over thirty years. The story shouldnt be that youve been fired. Dont muck up the story. But I dont want to be that person. I dont want to be the person who puts on a brave face and tells everyone, Oh, I decided to leave the company, when everyone knows you were really fired.Chambers is right to not hide what happened to her. In the immediate aftermath of a public firing, you can capitalize on everyone talking about you by redirecting the conversation. Be open that you need a job and askyour network to find you leads. Thats whatSree Sreenivasan did after he was fired from the Metropolitan Museum of species as their chief digital officer in 2013. He wrote a public Facebook post inviting anyone to tell him what he should do next.If you want to invite me to anything, I now have time, including for meaningful cups of coffee and drinks, Sreenivasan wrote. Id also love to go walking with anyone available. The suggestion from Chambers friend to take a longer view also has merit. By reframing the question over her firing around what she did accomplish at Briti sh Vogue over what ended it, the friend is looking towards the future, at employers and prospects down the line.Owning your story means not shying away from the bumps in your career, while also taking a longer view of your journey. To own your story, you must acknowledge that the firinghappened to you while not letting it become all you can talk about. Balancingthese scales, the important question after a firing becomes- how much to disclose?Chambers was frank around the anxieties about her firing, while also hinting that her career is not over Most people who leave Vogue end up feeling that theyre lesser than, and the fact is that youre never bigger than the company you work for. But I have a new idea now, and if it comes off maybe I wont be feeling so vulnerable after all.Insult your employer at your own perilChambers account is full of juicy details about the fashion magazine industrys fickle nature, and its uncomfortably close relationship with designers and advertisers. On desi gner Michael Kors, Chambers said that the June cover with Alexa Chung in a stupid Michael Kors T-shirt is crap. Hes a big advertiser so I knew why I had to do it. I knew it was cheesy when I was doing it, and I did it anyway. These insider details make for a great read, but asthe Fashion Law pointed out, theycan also lead to lawsuits. The legal website cited the Balenciaga lawsuit against its former creative director Nicolas Ghesquire after he gave a disparaging interview to amagazine where he compared his relationship to the fashion house to the sensation of being sucked dry, like they wanted to steal my identity.Compare that to Chambers comment about her former employer Truth be told, I havent readVoguein years. Maybe I was too close to it after working there for so long, but I never felt I led aVogue-ykind of life. The clothes are just irrelevant for most people - so ridiculously expensive. The lesson? Tell-alls are great for the reader, not always so great for the storyteller. Wh en you decide to spill, be careful aboutbreaching your non-disparagement and nondisclosure contracts. For Chambers, its clear that Cond Nast is not going to take her statementslying down. As of Thursday, the post now carries a new editorial disclaimer, saying that the site hasbeen contacted by lawyers on behalf of Conde Nast Limited and Edward Enninful OBE and have been requested to amend the interview. This request has now been granted.Curious about other ways to handle getting fired or laid off? We asked people who have been through it. Heres their excellent advice.

Supercharge Your Career in 2016 With These 3 Resolutions

Supercharge Yur Career in 2016 With These 3 Resolutions Supercharge Your Career in 2016 With These 3 Resolutions Before we left the office in 2015, we gathered around our big oak table, drank some bubbly, ate something round (its a thing) and scribbled down our New Years resolutions for 2016. We then passed around a pink and gold plastic cup, smashed our resolutions inside, and spent the last hour of the 2015 work week sharing our resolutions. Maren Hogan asked us to go around the table and share our most important ones. When she got to me, she said, Only one, Shaley. Why? Because Im definitely the person to have sevenreally important ones I just have to share. I looked at the long list I had made it got up to nearly twenty but I chose one (to get back into playing piano) and then was cautioned by Maren that making too many resolutions can be setting yourself up for failure. Smart woman she is Because its only been a few days into the New Year and she is right. I dont even know w here that stinkin list isTherefore, if Im going to give any adviceon making (and keeping) resolutions, Ill need to make them doable. Since 2016 is all about taking my career to the next level, I thought Id share the biggest actions anyone can take to up their game. Take a look at my plan to a brighter, better career this yearResolution No. 1 Stay relevant and get ahead of the curve by reading top news every day. Dont miss a beat in your industry or the industry you serve by keeping up with top headlines. Get into the habit of reading at least one industry-relevant article per day.Industry-focused media outlets like ERE, Recruiting Daily, Blogging4Jobs, Fistful of Talent(AHEM cough Red Branch cough) and, of course,Recruiter.comare all great sources for relevant, trending information. Plus, these outlets arededicated totheir industries, so you wont get distracted with unimportant or irrelevant news. The constant flow of information will serve you well in professional conversations and your work in general. The mora informed you are, the better your decisions will be.Its just a fact MindToolsexplains it bestFirst, youll make better decisions, and youll spot threats and opportunities early on, which can give you a competitive edge. This is especially important if you contribute to shaping your organizations strategy. Its also important if youre involved in abverkauf and marketing, where it helps you identify and take advantage of the sales opportunities that come your way.Secondly, keeping up-to-date with your industry is key for building expert power. By developing expertise in your job and your industry, youll earn the trust and respect of the people around you. From a leadership perspective, this is invaluableFinally, it will alert you to changes that you need to think about. How to keep your resolutionIt doesnt matter when or how you choose to digest the news, just make sure its via a medium that works best for you. If you prefer email, sign up for RSS subscript ions through Feedly, newsletters like The Middle Finger Project or 7 in 7, or Google Alerts delivered straight to your inbox. Enjoy browsing on your phone? See if your choice outlet has an app (Flipboard is rad) or a text messaging alert system.Tools to help The only tools youll need for this one are your preferred medium, your reading glasses (if you need them), and perhaps a daily reminder on your smartphoneResolution No. 2 Show more gratitude to the people you work with every day.Building healthy professional relationships with your coworkers is thought to increase productivity. Research showsthatthese social connections in the workplace make employees more engaged in their work and less likely to quit.Workplace conflict, on the other hand, negatively impacts motivation, retention, performance, cohesiveness, morale, and even safety. With more than 65 percent of performance problems coming from strained relationships between employees, make 2016 the year to get along with everyone (no matter your past differences).A great way to mend broken relationships with colleagues or start them off on the right foot is by showing gratitude and recognition. When is the last time you sent a handwritten personal thank-you note to someone who deserved it?How to keep your resolution Start an Evernote to keep track of the people who really helped you or stuck outthroughtheir exceptional work. When thanking someone, remember to be less menial and more meaningful. Thanking someone for helping you fix the Keurig can seem kind of weird I know coffee is often a matter of life or death, but maybe you should send that thank-you note to Josh, who stayed an hour late to help you reach your deadline, or Claire, who calmed you down after a bad performance review.Having trouble finding someone who has been nice to you? Just start doing nice things for others and watch the culture of your company shift.Tools to help Thank-you note cards will be your best friend. Keep a stack of them at y our desk. Obviously, you dont want to be handing these out left and right, or theyll lose their value. But if someone helped you in an exceptional way, they deserve a special thank-you noteYou can alsoshow gratitude or recognize your coworkers or bosses for a job well done through a project management tool like Bitrix24 or a real-time micro feedback tool like iRevu.Resolution No. 3 Improve your personal brand.Social media is an important part of your personal brand. Ifyoure not using it effectively, then youre missing out on a platform to showcase your expertise. In fact, 35 percent of employers are less likely to interview candidates if they cant find anything about them onlineMake sure to keep Facebook for personal usage, but sign up for a LinkedIn and Twitter account to promote your personal brand to a broader audience. Follow influencers and leaders in your industry (like ChinaGorman), curate content from industry-leading news sites and blogs (Social Talent is so fun), and engag e followers with your own tricks of the trade Once you get the hang of it, you can even start your own blog. There is a lot individuals can do to market themselves through social media to earn followers and gain traction in their fields. How to keep your resolution Improving your personal brand through social media is a daily effort, so set reminders on your phone at specific times of the day when your followers are most active.Tools to help Tools like SocialBro, Hootsuite, and Buffer all allow you to schedule tweets in advance. This way, you wont have to constantly checkin on your Twitter. Download the apps to your phone so you can easily access them on the go.There you have it Three doable resolutions any professional can put into practice or perfect for this new year. Keep em up and youll be on your way to a more credible reputation as an influencer and an overall better person to work for and with

Why you should trust your instincts at work

Why you should trust your instincts at workWhy you should trust your instincts at workMost employees and organizations can readily identify problems. They instinctually or factually understand how internal processes or functions are either dysfunctional or inefficient.Butmost of this understanding devolves into long-winded discussions by disgruntled employees or rants by managers at meetings. Decisions often are delayed or otherwise made in haste- and are oftentimes incorrect.Wrapping effort around improvements within your company can be difficult when the employees are either dismissed as non-contributors or when the leaders within the organization are not open to the concept of brainstorming. So what can managers and employees alike do to improve the decision-making process and ensure that decisions are tied to improved business productivity and profitability? For one listen to your gut instinct.A great verstndigung im strafverfahren of information is stored in our subconscious. In moments of decision-making, our bodies provide clues to answers through feelings or gut reactions (for a fascinating book on this subject, see Malcolm Gladwells Blink). Tune into your intuition - your decisions will be sounder.Everyone has those moments when the answer just seems to magically pop into your head or the solution becomesobvious. The same can be said for change and innovation. Often, individuals just seem to know when something is off, or alternatively when a solution is obvious. So why is this instinct so often ignored? Why do teams revert back to old ideas and behaviors so readily? As verified in research by Alex Sandy Pentland in his article Beyond the Echo Chamber, I believe much of this has to do with the second-guessing of our own (or others) instinctual decisions. There are two main reasons we dont trust our instincts.1. We let experts sway our opinionWithin an organization, often a handful of individuals are viewed as the experts and are the only ones either allow ed to or considered capable of making decisions.Experts, authority figures, and tenured employees tend to sway opinion. Those without this status tend to be undervalued and often do not speak up.When making decisions, it is best to remove any value judgments with regard to information. Non-status groups, such as newer or younger employees or even those unfamiliar with the system, can often provide a unique and valuable perspective.Make sure not to discount information that may come from a non-traditional source. In business, these sources and ideas can often be game-changers.2. We rely on partal prejudiceWe frequently only hear what we want to hear and see what we want to see. If you have expectations or biases, this will influence the outcome.Be aware of your own prejudices, and stay open to unexpected sources and content. The older we become, the more we think we know. It is easy to believe that due to our experience, we have seen what there is to see, or that we have already trie d all of the new ideas and concepts at one time or anotherAn employeemay think how can I know the answer when the expert says otherwise? How is his idea any good if I have experienced only the opposite? These types of internal dialogues are common among employees who are either dismissed as non-contributors or by leaders that are typically not open to the concept that brainstorming atypical ideas can actually be a good thing, that inviting people outside of your expected network can add value to the discussion. What you can do about itThe next time someone blurts out one of those a-ha moments, listen. Take notes. Vet the idea, not the person offering it.The composition of the teams that will tackle your problems is absolutely critical to your success. Make sure you have considered whether those individuals or teams making decisions consists only of experts, or those with over or under estimated value or personal prejudice. If it is, you are missing out on the possibility of exponentia l change for the good.Invite both the experts and the inexperienced, the ancillary, the vested, the customer, the manufacturer, the consultant, the boss - anyone who can add value to the discussion.Innovation and improvement is about ideas, not just process. Assemble accordingly.Dorriah L. Technology giants didnt deserve public trust in the first place

Technology giants didn’t deserve public trust in the first place Technology giants didn’t deserve public trust in the first place Amazon may have been expecting lots of public attention when it announced where it would establish its new headquarters â€" but like many technology companies recently, it probably didn’t anticipate how negative the response would be. In Amazon’s chosen territories of New York and Virginia, local politicians balked at taxpayer-funded enticements promised to the company. Journalists across the political spectrum panned the deals â€" and social media filled up with the voices of New Yorkers and Virginians pledging resistance.Similarly, revelations that Facebook exploited anti-Semitic conspiracy theories to undermine its critics’ legitimacy indicate that instead of changing, Facebook would rather go on the offensive. Even as Amazon and Apple saw their stock-market values briefly top US$1 trillion, technology executives were dragged before Congress, struggled to coherently take a stance on hate speech, got caught covering up sexual misconduct and saw their own employees protesting business deals. In some circles this is being seen as a loss of public trust in the technology firms that promised to remake the world â€" socially, environmentally and politically â€" or at least as frustration with the way these companies have changed the world. But the technology companies need to do much more than regain the public’s trust; they need to prove that they deserved it in the first place â€" which, when placed in the context of the history of technology criticism and skepticism, they didn’t.Looking away from the problemsBig technology companies used to frame their projects in vaguely utopian, positive-sounding lingo that obscures politics and public policy, transcending partisanship and â€" conveniently â€" avoiding scrutiny. Google used to remind its workers “Don’t be evil.” Facebook worked to “make the world more open and connected.” Who could object to those ideals?Scholars warned about the dangers of platforms like these, long before many of their fo unders were even born. In 1970, social critic and historian of technology Lewis Mumford predicted that the goal of what he termed “computerdom” would be “to furnish and process an endless quantity of data, in order to expand the role and ensure the domination of the power system.” That same year a seminal essay by feminist thinker Jo Freeman warned about the inherent power imbalances that remained in systems that appeared to make everyone equal.Similarly, in 1976, the computer scientist Joseph Weizenbaum predicted that in the decades ahead people would find themselves in a state of distress as they became increasingly reliant on opaque technical systems. Countless similar warnings have been issued ever since, including important recent scholarship such as information scholar Safiya Noble’s exploration of how Google searches replicate racial and gender biases and media scholar Siva Vaidhyanathan’s declaration that “the problem with Facebook is Facebook.”The technology companies are powerful and wealthy, but their days of avoiding scrutiny may be ending. The American public seems to be starting to suspect that the technology giants were unprepared, and perhaps unwilling, to assume responsibility for the tools they unleashed upon the world. In the aftermath of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, concern remains high that Russian and other foreign governments are using any available social media platform to sow discord and discontent in societies around the globe.Facebook has still not solved the problems in data privacy and transparency that caused the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Twitter is the preferred megaphone for President Donald Trump and home to disturbing quantities of violent hate speech. The future of Amazon’s corporate offices is shaping up to be a multi-sided brawl among elected officials and the people they supposedly represent. Is it ignorance or naivete?Viewing the present situation with the history of critiques of technology in m ind, it’s hard not to conclude that the technology companies deserve the crises they are facing. These companies ask people to entrust them with their emails, personal data, online search histories and financial information, to the point that many of these companies proudly tout that they know individuals better than they know themselves. They promote their latest systems, including “smart speakers” and “smart cameras,” seeking to ensure that users’ every waking moment â€" and sleeping moments too â€" can be monitored, feeding more data into their money-making algorithms.Yet seemingly inevitably these companies go on to demonstrate how unworthy of trust they actually are, leaking data, sharing personal information and failing to prevent hacking, as they slowly fill the world with a disturbing techno-paranoia worthy of an episode of “Black Mirror.”Technology firms’ responses to each new revelation fit a standard pattern: After a scandal emerges, the company involved expresses alarm that anything went wrong, promises to investigate, and pledges to do better in the future. Some time â€" days, weeks or even months â€" later, the company reveals that the scandal was a direct result of how the system was designed, and trots out a dismayed executive to express outrage at the destructive uses bad people found for their system, without admitting that the problem is the system itself.Zuckerberg himself told the U.S. Senate in April 2018 that the Cambridge Analytica scandal had taught him “we have a responsibility to not just give people tools, but to make sure that those tools are used for good.” That’s a pretty fundamental lesson to have missed out on while creating a multi-billion-dollar company.Rebuilding from what’s leftUsing any technology â€" from a knife to a computer â€" carries risks, but as technological systems increase in size and complexity the scale of these risks tends to increase as well. A technology is only useful if people ca n use it safely, in ways where the benefits outweigh the dangers, and if they can feel confident that they understand, and accept, the potential risks. A couple of years ago, Facebook, Twitter and Google may have appeared to most people as benign communication methods that brought more to society than they took away. But with every new scandal, and bungled response, more and more people are seeing that these companies pose serious dangers to society. As tempting as it may be to point to the “off” button, there’s not an easy solution. Technology giants have made themselves part of the fabric of daily life for hundreds of millions of people. Suggesting that people just quit is simple, but fails to recognize how reliant many people have become on these platforms â€" and how trapped they may feel in an increasingly intolerable situation. As a result, people buy books about how bad Amazon is â€" by ordering them on Amazon. They conduct Google searches for articles about how much info rmation Google knows about each individual user. They tweet about how much they hate Twitter and post on Facebook articles about Facebook’s latest scandal. The technology companies may find themselves ruling over an increasingly aggravated user base, as their platforms spread the discontent farther and wider than possible in the past. Or they might choose to change themselves dramatically, breaking themselves up, turning some controls over to the democratic decisions of their users and taking responsibility for the harm their platforms and products have done to the world. So far, though, it seems the industry hasn’t gone beyond offering half-baked apologies while continuing to go about business as usual. Hopefully that will change. But if the past is any guide, it probably won’t.Zachary Loeb, Ph.D. Student in History and Sociology of Science, University of PennsylvaniaThis article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. Pluralistic ignorance The value of self love and value

Pluralistic ignorance The value of self love and value Pluralistic ignorance The value of self love and value I’m an awful writer-in all the  quintessential ways. I’m wordy, dull, unimaginative and intellectually dishonestâ€"the absolute worst; just a doe-eyedâ€"well meaning-dud factory. It’s really easy to romanticize incompetence with a bounty of listicles constantly invading the internet like: Top 5 places Oprah use to collect cans when she was 24.  Or the sensational clickbaity ones like: Did you know Genghis Khan was a barista before his exceptional tour of barbarism?I, like many others, took all the wrong lessons from my hero’s failures. I observed them as good omens through the cracked lens of a cheap telescope. ‘J.K. Rowling also used to crash on her friend’s couch? I must be doing something right.’  It’s true that T.S Elliot savagely rejected Animal Farm, but it wasn’t because its author was a mud-mouthed dolt like I am.  My Confederacy Of Dunces,  a meandering snooze pamphlet I wrote in high school titled Space Monkey, will remain unpublished at my folks’ house b ack in PA, long after I’ve finally built up the mettle. At the time,  Space Monkey was the only thing I’d ever think about. I would tell everyone about it. My friends, family, even strangers. One time I offered a homeless shoe-shiner 40 bucks to let me read the first chapter to him. He accepted. Initially. The plot followed a utopian-Issac Newton-obsessed rhesus monkey from Nepal named, Albert.  He quits the monkey-start up he’s working for and heads to Washington D.C to join the space program.  All the other astronauts doubt Albert’s abilities by reason of his monkey-ness. They instance their prejudice through nuanced lines of dialogue: ‘What do you know about space, monkey?’This doesn’t stop Albert though. He studies hard and is eventually cleared to board the first shuttle into spaceâ€"wherein he dies on impact. The story is semi-biographical, it’s got pathos, heart and even some tragedy to boot. A sentiment zero publishers agreed withâ€"a  heartbreaking developmen t at the time that proved to be extraordinarily helpful. The months following a slew of rejection emboldened my perseverance.  My passion for literature encouraged an undeserved tenacity in me.  In my 16-year-old mind I was Millville, awaiting my Richard Bentley. But eventually, time strong-arms folly into meditation.  A meditation, that sees the relief of truth morph instantly into unrelenting embarrassment.  At 23, I blush to remember that, for years, my opus was a one-dimensional commentary on egalitarianism via the first monkey to go to space.  The query letters accompanying the manuscript were histrionic and self-important; they featured vivid illusions to generational change and references to James Baldwin.Discovering your passion and your aptitude aren’t on the same page is both dispiriting and necessary. I’m sure you’ve heard ad nauseam about the upside of failure being its ability to teach us things about our craft and ourselves. Both of those things are true but, if we only allow it, failure has the potential to play a much bigger role in our progress.Failure is an unavoidable, reckless fair-minded entity. It’s myopic to only take solace in the failures of your heroes because everyone is subject to it. Those of us that work hard-talented or untalented, as well as those of us that are lazy. Those of us that are kind, cruel, revel in risks and exercise prudence. Ultimately success belongs much more to chance than it does anything else, so give yourself a break and a fair shot. Weaponize failure against the tyranny of self-loathing.Stephen Fry recently sat down with Sam Harris where he talked about the fancy that leaches itself to youth. How we erroneously believe that: “..we are particularly privileged to have this access to the staggering beauty of everything … the  thisness and thatness of a thing” Fry recounts: “As a teenager, I didn’t want to lose it. I was aware that this would pass, that this was a phase… I believed that music and art were pathways to retaining it … these profound feelings and revelations.”The ghost of that intense relationship we have with the things we love rarely ever leaves us. In fact, it more often betrays us later in life. It demarcates success and failure with a stark-unforgiving line. To engage in work that isn’t meaningful on our terms is to fail, shamefully and resolutely. I’ve always empathized with that notion but I use to evidence my empathy unproductively.I would actively fight against the inner voices that told me I was never going to be a compelling novelist. I remained sanguine despite the freshet of evidence to the contrary. But the truth of the matter is, dedication and appreciation for a thing doesn’t, as a rule, yield mastery. Sometimes the things you’re passionate about just don’t feel the same way about you. However, despite what society will have you believeâ€"this is not a death sentence. The things that make you-you are more than the things that yo u enjoy doing and your worth does not exist on a continuum of how proficient you are at them. It’s all apart of it sure, but you’re bigger than that. Your identity can’t be caged by external validation-it’ll get in your way and make you sterile. Good work is much more sympathetic to those with earnest intentions. The concept of just going in and doing the job is becoming more and more outmoded. The thing that pays our bills must additionally employ meaning and fund our sense of self. If it doesn’t we submit to the professional malaise that defines our generation in the workplace. We all can’t be promethium, authors of innovation. Some of us, are simply “fine” â€"  but hacks have to eat too. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a creative field or not, If you express fidelity to the job itself as oppose to what the job is supposed to mean, I think you’ll find both the work and your well-being to be in a much better state.Self-compassion is salient to mental and physical fortitude equally. According to a study published in the journal  Clinical Psychological Science, “Being kind to oneself switches off the threat response and puts the body in a state of safety and relaxation that is important for regeneration and healing.”Fulfillment can’t be dependent on superficial factors. Your “calling” doubling as your “career” isn’t a license for it to determine your worth.More importantly, the infection of doubt plagues everyone. We’re all chasing the fear of being “found out.” Being outed as frauds.  Instead of giving the doubt the power to make us withdraw, we can manipulate it into encouraging solidarity. Your coworker probably thinks (knows) they suck just like you do. Let’s all make a point to suck together, unreservedly. It’s OK to be just “OK.”

Afform Your Future Success with Author Noah St. John [Interview]

Afform Your Future Success with Author Noah St. John [Interview] Afform Your Future Success with Author Noah St. John [Interview] Growing up poor in a rich neighborhood, St. John said he questioned why even though he read these books for many years and attempted to apply their concepts, he still wasn’t successful. Then, one morning in 1997, it hit him: Human thought is the process of asking and searching for answers to questions. “Why are we going around saying statements we don’t believe… when the human mind responds automatically to something even more powerful?” St. John questioned. Discovering the answer to this question changed his life as he created and named the process AFFORMATIONS ® â€" empowering questions that change your beliefs about yourself and your relationship to the universe. Today St. John is the best-selling author of The Book of AFFORMATIONS where he offers readers insights and steps to using this questioning process to enhance all areas of life. Recruiter.com had the opportunity to speak with St. John about his breakthrough concept. Read on to discover what his life and career advice on uncovering the missing piece to abundant health, wealth, love and happiness: 1. Where did you gain your insight and knowledge on the various topics of wealth, health, love and happiness? Reading the classics of personal growth literature gave me a better understanding of what human beings really want and why we so often stop ourselves from getting what we want. After discovering Afformations in 1997, I finally saw what was missing in traditional success literature â€" the understanding that most of us are unconsciously asking ourselves very disempowering questions, which is creating our lives. And that if we were to start asking more empowering questions, it would immediately and permanently change our lives. 2. Your book has helped tens of thousands of people change their lives for the better. What’s the most significant impact this book- whether writing it or seeing its results- has made in your own life? After I discovered Afformations, I immediately realized that this new mind technology could be used to help people in any area of life â€" to improve your finances, your health, your relationships, your business, your happiness, fulfillment and peace of mind. When I discovered Afformations, I was a broke college student with less than $800 to my name. Now I’m happily married to the love of my life, we live in a beautiful home in the Midwest, and I’m honored that my work is now used by people in 178 countries. At my company, SuccessClinic.com, our “2020 Vision” is to create 1,000 new millionaires and teach 10 million people how to use Afformations by the year 2020. 3. What is the biggest lesson or concept you hope readers take away from The Book of AFFORMATIONS? One of the most powerful tools in The Book of Afformations is to understand your Belief Gap. When you want to go from where you are to where you want to be, you’re trying to change your reality. I call that going from your CPR (Current Perceived Reality) to your NDR (New Desired Reality). But no matter what you want to do â€" whether it’s make more money, grow your business, get a raise, lose weight, find the love of your life â€" you first have to cross your own Belief Gap: the space between your CPR and your NDR. That’s one reason we’ve included more than 2 dozen real-life case studies of people who’ve doubled their income in less than a year, gone from broke to six figures, lost over 100 pounds, and found love after divorce using this new technology of Afformations. Want to learn more? Stay tuned for part 2 of this article to discover Noah St. John’s advice on how to think like a millionaire in less than 5 minutes per day!

3 Sleeping Habits to Maximize Your Recruiting Potential

3 Sleeping Habits to Maximize Your Recruiting Potential 3 Sleeping Habits to Maximize Your Recruiting Potential If you want to avoid the long list of horrible  effects of sleep deprivation,  use these three tips: Tip 1: Beds Are for Sleeping, Not Smartphones For busy people, sleeping is that time between one shift and the next. Therefore, things like email find their ways into our relaxation time. In 2013,  49 percent of people admitted to checking their email  immediately after waking up at least sometimes. Moreover, 54 percent of people admit to checking email before they go to bed. Studies show that  bright lights before bed can lead to a reduction in melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that helps control sleep and wake cycles, and without it, we lose that sleepy feeling. A lack in melatonin also has been shown to impair the immune system and increase risk of cancer, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. By separating yourself from your screens and lowering the lights around you an hour before bed, you will significantly lower your chances of suppressing melatonin. You can also install the software  f.lux on your devices. The program can be installed on any Apple device and will automatically adjust your display colors to suit the time of day. Tip 2: Know What Works for Your Body Chronotypes are a genetic explanation as to why a person feels more awake at one part of the day than at another time. Studies show that a gene known as PER1 determines if you are a night owl, morning lark, or hummingbird (right in the middle). If you happen to find yourself identifying more with one over the other, but cannot change your work schedule to suit it,  use bright lights to trick your body into working with you and not against. The morning lark who is bright eyed and bushy tailed in the early hours but needs to work late should fill their evenings with bright lights and more activities like hitting the gym or going for a walk. The night owl with a morning shift should fill their early hours with light and activity. Going to bed with the curtains open will let natural light in, to help your body feel more awake. Tip 3: Forget Practicing Scheduling Makes Perfect Once you have figured out a schedule that works for you, stick to it! It is believed that it takes 21 days to make something a habit, but scientists are finding that it may take closer to  66 days for a new habit to truly set in. In other words: though it may be rough in the beginning, sticking to your new schedule will only become easier. Going back to the days of college, it’s crazy to believe that there was ever a time that all-nighters existed. In all honesty, they never should have. Having better sleeping habits is pivotal to more than just surviving an 8-hour workday: it’s about surviving, period. Maintaining a healthy sleep cycle will help you in and out of the office, so learn to identify when you are on the clock, off the clock, or in need  of a total clock reset  altogether. Do you have a healthy sleep habit you would like to share with  other recruiters? Tell us in the comments!

The unspoken rules of drinking with your younger coworkers

The unspoken rules of drinking with your younger coworkers The unspoken rules of drinking with your younger coworkers You’ve got a family waiting at home,  you can’t hold your booze like you used to, and you don’t feel like you have much in common with the 20-and 30-somethings in your office. And once again, there’s a happy hour invitation on your calendar, waiting for your response. As you move along in your work life, it’s normal to lose interest in after-work events. Over the years, your own family, hobbies and friends increasingly absorb time and interest- while your junior colleagues start to seem younger and younger. At a certain point, that age and cultural divide can make for awkward feelings. “You might be concerned about not knowing which drinks are in or not getting their humor,” says Regina Duffey Moravek, a human resources professional with Bravely, an HR and workplace coaching platform. “Or being judged as the old person in the room.”But always hitting the delete key on the invite can have consequences beyond your immediate reputation, says Judith Rowe, a coaching and ca reer development expert. Chilling and mingling with your office mates in a more relaxed setting builds bonds that can enable better collaboration.Plus, some of these younger folks might be your boss someday- if they aren’t already. Either way, it’s a chance to make connections that might come in handy, now or later in your career. So even if you have a young family or lots of outside-work commitments, make it a point to head over to the bar with your younger colleagues sometimes- and send regrets when you can’t.“Encourage your co-workers to keep inviting you, because one day everything will line up just right and you’ll be able to go,” says Carlos Escobar, an HR and talent development expert in San Antonio, Texas. When you do say yes, use these tips to mingle more easily.Give yourself a time limitThere’s plenty of room between being a no-show and shutting the place down.Making a relatively short appearance at a fete is fine, says Moravek. If you don’t want to look like you’re heading out early, then arrive after the event is already in full swing. On the other hand, if you feel like a bit of an outsider to the larger group, try to walk over with your closest friends on the way from the office.Find common groundIt’s easy to dismiss the concerns of your younger peers. But in reality, many of your worries are probably pretty similar. You’ve got a giant mortgage? They’ve got student loans to pay. Marital woes? Remember, dating’s no picnic either. And if you don’t feel like sharing, listen up. “We tend to think we have to jump in and contribute immediately, but that isn’t the case,” says Escobar. “It helps to sit back, relax, and enjoy the conversation for a bit before picking our moment.”Keep at your own paceChances are, you can’t down four shots and still turn up looking fresh at 8:30 am. So take it easy. Have one drink, then switch to seltzer with lime.Or don’t drink at all. No one will notice if your glass holds soda or a wi ne spritzer. Your colleagues are far too focused on themselves.Be yourselfOf course you’ve had different life experiences from your younger office mates. “There’s nothing wrong with that,” Escobar says. It’s fine to admit you don’t get current cultural references (Bebe Rexha,  who?). And you don’t have to hide your family life.“Tell stories about your child and spouse,” says Escobar. “If you use slang that no one understands anymore, own it. Interactions like this are part of what make us human, and sharing that human experience is something everyone is hardwired to enjoy.”That said, it doesn’t hurt to arm yourself with ideas for crowd-pleasing conversations. Cooking, sports, exercise, travel: just about everyone on earth has a story to share. Then when your co-workers spin off into a long story about Bebe Rexha or Black Mirror, nod knowingly, and move on.This article first appeared on Considerable.

Managers and Employee Termination

Managers and Employee Termination Managers and Employee Termination Managers and Employee Termination Letting an employee go is a difficult situation most managers want to avoid, but with the right preparation and professionalism, you can get through such a tough talk with your dignity and your employees intact. Firing Best Practices Another manager or HR representative should always be present, especially if terminating a potentially hostile employee or one who might twist your words or make false accusations. It is also best to include a balance of genders, says Lissa Weimelt, principal with The Hiring Experts, a retained executive search firm. The best place to terminate is a private office or meeting room close to an exit there is nothing worse than an upset employee having to traipse through a workplace to find his way out. Out of respect for and fairness to the employee, terminate as early in the workweek and day as possible. In addition, bring tissues and water as well as the phone number for an employee assistance program representative, if available, says Scott Cawood, PhD, president of ModernThink, an employee management consulting firm. If you let someone work all day, then they are giving to the company, and other employees will see this as disrespectful that you let them give all day long, or all week long, then fired them at the last possible moment, says Cawood, author of Destination Profit: Creating People-Profit Opportunities in Your Organization. Fire them early and pay them for the day, but let them leave right after the meeting. There are logistical issues to work out, too. Cawood once had to terminate an employee who used a company car. How will that employee get home? Finally, have any necessary paperwork or documents ready to avoid scrambling for them as the employee tries to leave. What to Say and How to Say It When the time comes, its best to just get down to business, says Pamela Holland, author of Help! Was That a Career Limiting Move? and chief operating officer of Brody Communications. The termination discussion should be as brief as possible, she says. Your tone should be calm and assertive. According to Weimelt, ex-employees often criticize former employers for giving vague reasons for termination. Being prepared, staying calm and speaking respectfully is critical to a termination procedure, she says. Many employees actually know when they are not doing a good job. If the termination itself is handled well, an ex-employee is less likely to blame the employer for being fired. Managers should know that saying too much can get them into legal hot water, says Weimelt. Therefore, its important to make a prepared, written statement that can be placed in the employees personnel file, such as: John, after reviewing your work performance for the last two months, we concluded that this job is not a good fit for your skills. Because of that, today is your last day. We thank you for working with us on a smooth transition. You will have time to gather your personal items, and we will assist you. Cawood says its important to get to the point quickly. You should let someone know the real deal within three minutes of the start of the meeting, he says. Dont worry about breaking the ice. There is nothing you can do that will make the message pleasurable. After You Drop the Bomb According to Weimelt, employees may have a variety of questions, including: Can you give me an example of what I did wrong? Will I get a reference from you? Can I file for unemployment? Are you going to tell other employees I am fired? Do I get any severance? The best policy overall is to avoid being backed into the specifics trap and refer any questions regarding company policy to HR. Managers need to keep sight of the bigger picture. The important thing to remember is that your role as a manager is to ensure that certain deliverables are being met in keeping with the companys strategic direction, says Holland. When someone fails to do that in his or her job, either because of lack of ability or bad judgment, you must draw strength in the fact that by terminating that person, you are fulfilling your obligations and doing the right thing. Its also important to remember that your delivery can help soften the blow. There is never an easy way to share hard information, says Cawood. You can, however, be sensitive to the employees need to process the data, be upset and avoid being embarrassed. Look ahead Nobody likes layoffs, and as the boss, you have to shoulder the burden of delivering the bad news while also making sure the rest of the teams morale doesnt plummet. 27 Email Templates for Work Settings - The Muse

27 Email Templates for Work Settings - The Muse 27 Email Templates for Work Settings Communication is hard work. According to recent research, we spend 1/3 of our time in the office on email- a number that’s surely rising.
